Dental to get her teeth into debut at Mornington

Darryl Sherer - Monday September 11

A trip away has convinced trainer Troy Corstens that Dental is ready to go to the races for the first time at Mornington on Wednesday.

The three-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock had shown good ability in gallops and jumpouts at Flemington however, Corstens opted to take Dental to Cranbourne for a barrier trial last Monday.

Dental finished third behind Divine Messenger over 800m on a heavy track and Corstens, who trains Dental in partnership with his father Leon, said the trip accomplished what he was seeking.

"She's a very nice filly we've got a lot of time for and has shown us she can gallop," Corstens said.

"She's done everything here at Flemington and we thought it would be good for her to go away, have a trial and experience something close to what she will meet on a race day.

"She didn't have a hard trial, coped with it all very well and had a good experience."

Before the trip to Cranbourne, Dental showed good speed when finishing runner-up to subsequent Caulfield winner Mr Sneaky in a 800m jumpout at Flemington on August 25.

Related to Australian Derby winner Don Eduardo and Australasian Oaks winner Tristalove, Corstens said he is expecting the Jonathan Munz-homebred to be a better filly next preparation.

"She's shown us she has ability and I think she can run a forward race on Wednesday but I do think she will be better next time around," Corstens said.

"She's drawn nicely on Wednesday and it looks a nice race to start her off in."

Dental runs in the second race, the Annie Ammitzboll Plate, for three-year-old fillies over 1000m and Corstens has also accepted with Modern Wonder in the sixth races for fillies and mares over 1200m.

Much to the frustration of her trainer, the daughter of Snitzel has drawn the outside in a field of 11.

"I'll wait and see with her," Corstens said. "She's going well but just can't draw a barrier. The track is already soft and if we did happen to get anymore rain then we might just wait for another day with her."

Stephen Baster will be aboard Dental on Wednesday.
