Ones to Watch – Geelong

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday December 22

The first two races at Geelong on Tuesday were both won by three year-olds having their first start and both dominated in a manner that would suggest more wins are in store.

Nicconi filly Retrovailles was sent out favourite for the 112m maiden and proved punters knew exactly how good she was when romping clear to win by more than three lengths.

Trained by Mick Price and Mick Kent Jr, Retrovailles was a modest $40,000 Magic Millions National Sale purchase from the Element Hill draft and judging by this win looks a very promising type.

She is the fourth winner from four foals to race from unraced Show a Heart mare Glorious Show, a daughter of stakes-winner Khaptrist.

The following race over 1212m was won even more easily by Hallowed Crown gelding Duke of Neworleans, who bolted in to win by eight lengths, making light of the heavy conditions.

Winning rider Ethan Brown was full of praise for the Matt Laurie trained three year-old.

"He has a nice big action on him and he's got plenty more wins in store," Brown said.

"He didn't get through the (Heavy) going too bad but in saying that, I think he's just a nice horse, wet ground or dry ground won't worry him too much."

Retained to race by his breeders, Duke of Neworleans is the fourth winner from six foals to race from Encosta de Lago mare Page Three Girl, who comes from the family of Group I winners Centaurea and Magari.

He is the fourth winner from five to race bred on the Hallowed Crown x Encosta de Lago nick, which is something for breeders to consider.
