Widden Sires Treble at Sha Tin

Tara Madgwick - Sunday December 20

Widden Stud based sires produced three winners at the Sha Tin meeting on Sunday with victory for Celestial Power (Star Witness), Healthy Happy (Zoustar) and impressive first starter Carroll Street (Outreach).

Trained by Douglas Whyte, Carroll Street was sent out at long odds, but defied the lack of support from punters to post an emphatic length and three-quarter win over 1000m.

Whyte was quietly confident Carroll Street would acquit himself well against talented opposition, but never dreamt he would win the way he did.

“I thought he would be in the first three. I didn’t think he would win like that,” Whyte said after Carroll Street downed hot favourite Forte.

“When you bump a horse (Forte) that’s one-for-one and 1.7 favourite, you don’t come here with a lot of confidence to take him on.

“He did a very good job. He got held up a bit there, but he has got a turn of foot.

“The main key to him is that he wants to be ridden quiet, he wants to catch a breath and he wants to get into a rhythm.

“He’s just not a horse that copes with pressure the whole way. He needs to think about things and then let go.

“That’s why I’ve taken time with him. He could have gone either way but fortunately, he’s gone the right way.”

A $32,000 Inglis Scone purchase from the Widden Stud draft for John Foote Bloodstock, Carroll Street is the first winner for Brooklyn Rain, a Manhattan Rain mare from the Singles Bar branch of the Easy Date family that has produced Group I winners King’s Legacy and Oohood as well as leading sire Not a Single Doubt.

He looks a bright prospect for Widden Stud’s well bred young Exceed and Excel stallion Outreach, whose oldest progeny are three year-olds.
