Better Than Ready's Alpine Edge Makes Winning Debut in Phelan Ready

Mark Smith - Saturday December 12

The Better Than Ready colt Alpine Edge will head to the Magic Millions 2yo Classic at the Gold Coast in January after making the bravest of debuts in Saturday’s Listed The Phelan Ready To Buy A Boom Stakes (1000m) at Eagle Farm.

Ridden by Robbie Fradd for Toby and Trent Edmonds, Alpine Edge controlled the race from the front to deny the Spirit Of Boom colt Cochrane by a short-head with a half-length back to the favoured Press Statement colt Baby Wong in third.

“I was quite surprised to see him lead, but when the favourite was a little tardy away, he got there,” Trent Edmonds said.

“The horse from Melbourne (Rambeau) kept him honest for the entirety. It’s a big relief, quite an amazing feeling to be honest.

“This race has been good to us. I think that is our third win.

“He has a stack of improvement. He came here very soft today.

“He is a Magic Millions horse; we bought him at the Sunday session. We will follow the now tried and true path, giving him a week off, and he can start a week before (the 2yo Classic) then back up.

“He has got a lovely big, long, lopping action. I think we are not going to see the best of him until a little bit later so whatever he is doing now is on raw ability.”

Purchased by Edmonds Racing/Kestral Thoroughbreds/Lucky Clover for $160,000 out of the Yarramalong Park draft from Book 2 of the 2020 Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Alpine Edge was the most expensive yearling by his sire to be sold at public auction in 2020.

She is the second winner from three to race out of the stakes-placed Freeze mare Freezethemillions.

Alpine Edge was a $160,000 Magic Millions yearling

Purchased for just $5,000 at the 2013 QTIS Yearling Sale, Freezethemillions hails from the family of champion racehorse and sire Zeditave.

Freezethemillions has a yearling colt by Deep Field, which will be in the  Yarramalong Park draft heading to the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Freezethemillions foaled a full-brother to Alpine Edge on September 10.

Alpine Edge becomes the fourth stakes-winner for Lyndhurst Stud Farm’s Better Than Ready who has 16 lots catalogued for the Gold Coast and three at the Inglis Classic.
