Makfi's Attorney Claims Pakenham Cup

Mark Smith - Saturday December 5

Punters were on the ball in Saturday's $300,000 Listed Sportsbet Pakenham Cup (2500m), hammering the Matthew Smith-trained Attorney (FR) into favouritism.

Settled midfield, one off the fence by Nash Rawiller, the 6yo son of Makfi (GB) moved into a challenging position on the turn. Under hard riding he swept down the centre of the track to defeat Creedence (Helmet) by a half-length with Knights Order (So You Think) a short-half-head back in third.

It was the second win in the Pakenham Cup for Rawilller after Classic Benbara won the feature seventeen years ago.

"It's good to be back and catch up with old friends and acquaintances that I've ridden for over the years," Rawiller told Racing.com.

"I think he is a really good stayer, he just proved that.

"It was a bit of a slog, but he really shone through when it counted.

"I think he will be placed to advantage in the autumn where could win a Sydney Cup or something like that."

It was the second stakes win in Australia for Attorney (FR) after capturing the Group III Colin Stephen Quality at Rosehill in September.

The OTI colour-bearer had some decent form in Europe when trained in France by Mikel Delzangles.

He won his first two starts in Australia at Newcastle and Canterbury but went winless in six starts before his success in the Colin Stephen.

A €52,000 purchase by David Revers at the 2016 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Attorney (FR) advances his record to five wins and two seconds from 16 starts with earnings of $415,478.

He is the best of two winners from three to race out of the winning Montjeu mare Tia Kia, who is a half-sister to Commodore (Danehill) a stakes-winner in India, and the stakes-placed Nolohay (Dubawi) out of the Group III winning Singspiel mare Antioquia.
