Rommel Off The Mark

Mark Smith - Saturday December 5

Mogumber Park Stud’s Rommel became the 11th first-crop sire to get off the mark before Christmas when the Neville Parnham-trained filly Ultimare Comand made a winning career debut at Ascot.

With Brad Parnham in the saddle, Ultimate Command led at every call to defeat her stablemate, the Cable Bay (IRE) filly Flying Missile by a half-length with a further one and quarter lengths back to the favoured Snitzel filly Astrape in third.

Bred by part-owner Santo Guagliardo, Ultimate Comand was purchased by her trainer for $15,000 out of the Mogumber Park draft at the 2020 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

He is the second winner from three to race out of the Lonhro mare Weona Lady who was purchased by John Chalmers bloodstock at the 2010 NZB Premier Yearling Sale.

Ultimate Command was a $15,000 Perth Magic Millions Yearling

Out of a half-sister to the Group II VRC Ascot Vale Stakes winner Scardee Cat from the family of triple Group 1 winner Kinjite, Weona Lady has a yearling filly by Rommel who was sold for $1,750 at the April 2020 Inglis Online Sale.

Weona Lady was served by Rommel again last season but missed.

The winner of the Groupo II WATC West Australian Guineas and Group III MRC Zeditave Stakes, Rommel was also raced by Santo Guagliardo and trained by Neville Parnham.

The son of Commands covered 56 mares in his first season, 39 in his second and 31 last season at Mogumber Park where he stood for $4,400.

What Stallions Can Step Up in Hong Kong?
The Hong Kong racing season is over for another year, so a look at their sire tables by earnings and winners is always interesting and there is no surprise at the top with now pensioned Deep Field claiming his fourth consecutive champion sire title, but given he is now out of the picture the big question is what sires will replace him?
