One to Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Friday December 4

Les Bridge might have lost his stable star Classique Legend to Hong Kong, but gee he has a nice three year-old to attempt to fill the void and he’s a son of Shamus Award, who is a young sire that has come of age in 2020.

Lennon was having his second start in the 1400m maiden following a debut fifth at Kembla last month and was super impressive in bolting clear to win by two and a half lengths.

He jumped fast, but was steadied to take a trail and really hit top gear over the final furlong to win running away.

A $26,000 Inglis Scone purchase for his trainer from the Widden Stud draft, Lennon was bred by Widden Stud and is a half-brother to stakes-placed Rocket Star.

He is the third winner from unraced Pivotal mare Tragic Moment (USA), a half-sister to stakes-winner Il Warrd from the family of European Group I winner Zafeen and Get Her Number, a Group I winner in the US this year at two.

Tragic Moment was on-sold by Widden Stud in 2019 at the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale for $55,000 where she was snapped up by Rosemont Stud, who interestingly now stand Lennon’s sire Shamus Award.

Shamus Award

Tragic Moment has a yearling colt by Star Witness and a colt foal by Starspangledbanner, who covered her again this spring, but in light of Lennon’s win today, the Rosemont team may be wishing they had gone Shamus Award instead!

The most successful son of Snitzel at stud, Shamus Award is enjoying a great season with four stakes-winners, all of them Group winners headed by his Group I winner Mr Quickie.
