By a Thousand Dollar Stallion out of a Five Hundred Dollar Mare and He is a Gun

Mark Smith - Sunday November 29

Shane Oxlade’s One More Jack boasts a record that has earned the respect of punters, yet he sent pedigree buffs scurrying to the Stud Book when he became a milestone first stakes-winner for the unheralded Typhon in Saturday’s Listed  City Of Marion Stakes at Morphettville.

With Paul Gatt in the saddle, One More Jack overpowered the outsider Trip (Good Journey) in the closing stages to win by a head with a further length back to the favourite Too Good Too Hard (All Too Hard) in third.

One More Jack is one of 14 live foals from the third crop of the God’s Own stallion Typhon, an unraced three-quarter brother to Magnus and a half-brother to Helsinge the dam of Black Caviar and All Too Hard.

Purchased by Glenrae Stud owners John and Colin Young at the 2012 Inglis Great Southern Sale for $9,000, Typhon stood his first season at a fee of $1,650.

He covered for six seasons leaving 84 foals. After serving two mares in 2016 and one in 2017, time was called on his career.

He found support in his first two seasons through Bevan and Lynette Crowell.

The couple sent their mare Husson Spirit who was purchased for a princely $500 after she finished in front of a few stragglers in her only two starts at Muswellbrook and the Sunshine Coast.

The daughter of Hussonet (USA) had been decidedly more popular at the 2008 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale when knocked down for $120,000.

Hussonet an important broodmare sire (Mark Smith)

The first foal was Balwarra Spirit who retired a maiden after 12 starts. As is the unpredictable nature of breeding, the second foal was One More Jack and he is a gun.

After breaking his maiden at his third start, the son of Typhon reeled off six consecutive wins.

He has now won eight of his 13 starts while banking 223,330.

Husson Spirit was given a quiet time after foaling One More Jack.

She was covered just once in the subsequent four seasons but missed. She was covered late last year by the Dark Angel stallion Dont Bother Me (IRE).

Though she failed to distinguish herself on the track, Husson Spirit has a bit of depth to her pedigree.

A daughter of the excellent broodmare stallion Hussonet (USA) she is out of the Lure mare Ispirata who is a half-sister to the Group 1 Prix Lupin winner Cloudings and Listed winner Lady Wishing Well.

Ispirata is herself a granddaughter of the Group 1 Irish One Thousand Guineas heroine Royal Danseuse.
