One to Watch – Wyong

Tara Madgwick - Thursday November 26

Golden Slipper winning sire Vancouver gave us a promising debut maiden winner at Wyong on Thursday.

Prepared by Hawkes Racing, three year-old gelding Yukon had only trialled once previously for an unremarkable last of eight at Rosehill, but he made a lie of that form when scoring a tenacious short half head win in the 1350m maiden.

When tearaway leader Black Sage came back to the field Yukon was ready to pounce and was strong to the line for Tommy Berry to make a winning debut.

A $360,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Hawkes Racing from the Widden Stud draft , Yukon runs for a big group of owners headed by Rupert Legh in whose colours he runs.

Yukon as a yearling

Yukon is the fourth winner from four foals to race from Phantom Queen, a half-sister by Charge Forward to Group I winner and $2.4million earner Sweet Idea and Group II winner Showtime, now standing at Arrowfield Stud.

Phantom Queen has a two year-old colt by American Pharoah (USA) that made $400,000 at Inglis Easter this year, also bought by Hawkes Racing.

Yukon is the tenth winner this season for Vancouver, who stands at Coolmore at a fee of $30,250.
