Old Warrior Laid to Rest

Media Release - Wednesday November 18

The US Gr.1 winner Honor in War who is remembered for his straight-long tussle with champion Takeover Target in the Villiers-Gr.2 (1400m), a race he was awarded on protest, has died at his long-time home Dara Farm in the lower Hunter Valley.

Vale, Honor in War.

"He had serious complications from an attack of colic and had to be humanely put down on November 18 at age 21," the farm's owner David Bay said.

"He was the kindest horse you could imagine and it was a pleasure to have him here," he said of the horse, who won 11 of his 44 starts including the Turf Classic-Gr.1 at Churchill Downs and then the Villiers at age eight when trained by Chris Waller.

He also ran five seconds (two Gr.1) and eight thirds. A son of Gr.1 winner Lord at War (a grandson of Brigadier Gerard) and the Diesis mare Catumbella (tracing to La Troienne), he was among the last tracing in male line to Fair Trial. He left about 20 winners at stud.
