Affair To Remember Completes Grand Day for Toronado.

Mark Smith - Saturday November 7

The four-year-old, Dan O’Sullivan mare Affair To Remember completed a memorable day for Swettenham Stud stallion Toronado (IRE) when she did best in a driving finish to the Group II TAB Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

Earlier in the day Toronado (IRE) struck with Shelby Cobra in the Listed Amanda Elliott Stakes before Beehunter was edged out of a 1600m contest on the undercard.

With high-flying apprentice Michael Poy in the saddle, Affair To Remember defeated the very game Paradee (Epaulette) by a short-half-head with Toffee Tongue (Tavistock) a nose back in third in a dramatic finish.

“She’s always shown great ability but makes it hard on herself by walking out at the start but this has been my target race right through, to get to 2000m at Flemington, we need more of these for the mares,” O’Sullivan said. “

It’s a relief to get it done and it’s great for the owners who have stuck solid. David Peacock who breeds a lot of these mares, it’s a great result for him.

uo;He (Michael Poy) has done a good job. The owners were pleased by the way he was riding and so was I. Early days I was having trouble in getting jockeys to stick, so he stuck with her and got the job done today.”

Raced by her breeder David Peacock and partners, Affair To Remember advances her record to four wins, one second and four thirds from 15 starts with earnings of $422,000.

A half-sister to Group 1 SAJC Schweppes Oaks third Bahamas (Teofilo) and stakes-placed Exodus (Bernardini), Affair To Remember is the best of five winners from six to race out of the good class Black Hawk (GB) mare St Trinians.

A tripe stakes-winner in Adelaide St Trinians has a yearling filly by Toronado but missed last spring.

Affair To Remember becomes the eihgth stakes-winner for Swettenham Stud shuttler Toronado (IRE) who also had a winner, Validar,  at the Gold Coast on Saturday while his son Come Right Back was a close second over 2200m at Ascot.
