Victoria Derby Contender for Savabeel

Tara Madgwick - Saturday October 17

Sangster was the first serious horse to put trainer Trent Busuttin on the map when winning the 2011 Victoria Derby and Busuttin hopes he can win the race again this year with another son of Savabeel in Albarado, winner of the Group III MRC Caulfield Classic (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

A winner on debut at Ballarat back in May, Albarado has been gradually stepping up in distance and was a last start third in a Listed race at Flemington over 1800m.

He appreciated the longer trip again for this assignment proving tenacious to the line in scoring a head win in a blanket finish for Mark Zahra in front of a pair of Dundeel colts in Let’s araka Deel and Hit the Shot.

“Sangster was our first good horse and hopefully this bloke can replicate that success in a couple of weeks time,” said co-trainer Trent Busuttin, who trains with Natalie Young.

A $140,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase from the Rich Hill Stud draft for his trainer, Albarado has two wins and three placings from six starts with prizemoney topping $200,000.

Albarado as a yearling

He is the first  winner for Group III winning O’Reilly mare O’Fille and is the 103rd stakes-winner for Waikato Stud’s champion sire Savabeel.

Interestingly, he is the 17th stakes-winner for Savabeel bred from a daughter of champion sire O’Reilly, the nick running at nearly 13% stakes-winners to runners.

That looks like a Derby pedigree!
