One to Watch - Tapit to the Fore Again

Mark Smith - Friday October 9

With first season sire Frosted (USA) earning a 1-3 finish in last Saturday’s Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington and Love Tap putting his unbeaten record on the line in Saturday's Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick, it is doubtful the stocks of champion North American stallion Tapit have been higher south of the equator.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained filly Outflank kept up the momentum when breaking through in a 1000m maiden on the Ballarat synthetic on Friday.

The 3yo filly tested Dean Yendell’s horsemanship down the straight before drawing clear to defeat Ms Minnelli (Street Boss) by one and three-quarter lengths with the odds-on favourite        Verchenova (Skilled) a long-head back in third.

Outflank has made one previous start when down the field over 1000m at Moonee valley in January.

The

grey daughter of Tapit had been purchased for $300,000 by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock out of the Vinery Stud draft at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Bred by Phoenix Thoroughbreds, Outflank is the first foal of the well-performed Into Mischief mare Best Behavior (CAN) who won 10 and placed in a further 16 times in a 31 start career.

Her highlight came in the Grade III $100,000 Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Outflank was a $300,000 Magic Millions yearling

Best Behavior (CAN) arrived in Australia in 2017 with Outflank in utero and was purchased by David Lucas, on behalf of Phoenix thoroughbreds for $500,000 out of the Newgate Farm draft at that year’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

She has a 2yo filly by Capitalist who was purchased by James Bennett Racing for $18,000 at this year’s Inglis scone Yearling Sale.

The daughter of Into Mischief was covered by Merchant Navy last year.
