Dual Group 3 winning mare Jamaican Rain (Manhattan Rain) has become the most expensive mare sold through the broodmare category on Inglis Digital topping the September (Late) Online Sale at $280,000.
It is also the fourth highest lot in the platform’s history, following race fillies Manaya ($400,000 July 2019) and Set Goals ($321,000 June 2019), plus a 25% share in Mustajeer ($320,000).
Offered unreserved by Swettenham Stud (as agent), the triple Stakes winning mare was bought by a determined Rosemont Stud, following an intense bidding dual.
“These quality race mares are very hard to buy in any market, so to secure a mare of her quality at that price, felt like good value,” Rosemont Stud’s Ryan McEvoy said.
“She was very dynamic at her best and we’ve seen time and time again that these talented sprinting mares have a superior record as producers, so let’s hope that she is lucky and we are reflecting on a job well done in years to come!”
Jamaican Rain is the 69th lot to sell for $100,000 or more on Inglis Digital since 2018, with Janneke (Olympic Glory) and Aftermath (Spirit of Boom) also selling for six figures.
The September Online Sale grossed $3.1 million and posted an extraordinary 84% clearance rate.
Janneke, offered in the race filly section, was bought for $140,000 by Arlington Park Racing’s Brett Bradley, who also purchased the top lot the Great Southern Sale on Inglis Digital (Exceed and Excel x Vincennalia).
“The driving force behind buying Janneke was that Yes Yes Yes is in the family, I bred him and I want to increase my exposure to that family,” Bradley said.
“I still have his dam Sin Sin Sin and I’m breeding with her but when I saw this mare was on Inglis Digital, I thought I would have a crack.
“I received some good advice from Widden Stud who are taking a share in the mare, she’s already booked to be covered by Yes Yes Yes’ sire Rubick this season to keep that theme going with the family and I think he’s a stallion that will suit her.
“The amount of information you can share online through photos, videos and reports makes the process easier and gives you confidence when buying.”
Widden Stud’s Matt Comerford said the Inglis Digital platform continued to provide a viable trading option throughout the breeding season.
“We’ve supported the platform from its inception and we utilise it regularly.
“The amount of enquiries we receive when offering horses on Inglis Digital is incredible and it’s been well documented that the current climate has seen the platform grow even further.
“With so much information readily available through photos, videos and reports, more and more people are becoming confident trading online.”
3YO colt Aftermath (Spirit of Boom) was bought by Te Akau Stud’s David Ellis for $110,000 while 4YO gelding Creator (Redoute’s Choice) sold to Perth-based Gangemi Thoroughbreds for $80,000.
Both horses were raced by James Harron managed syndicates.
“We have sold a number of horses through Inglis Digital and find it both a great way for our owners to sell a horse who is not going to make it to stallion grade, but has plenty of racing left for the new owners,” Harron said.
“The tried horses we have sold on Inglis Digital have achieved an 85% future winners to runners figure, which is very pleasing.
“Aftermath and Creator are both proven at city level and look like lovely prospects to go forward with for their new owners.”
Other notable results include, Queensland galloper Astro Boy Toy (Deep Field) seling to Mark McLean for $95,000 and a yearling colt by Tosen Stardom from Childhood purchased by Belmont Bloodstock for the same price.
While New Zealand-based mare Eager Beaver (Darci Brahma) – a full sister to Catalyst, was bought by Chris Jory for $75,000.
Buyers in the September (Late) Online Auction included Arrowfield Stud, Boomer Bloodstock, Flying Start Syndications, Fortuna Limited, Glastonbury Farms, Nick Olive, Ramsey Pastoral and fledgling trainer Annabel Neasham, who went to $42,500 to secure 4YO gelding Gunfighter, offered by Newhaven Park (as agent).
Neasham had earlier continued her 100% winning strike rate with Zarzou winning the first at Canberra and bid on the auction via her mobile at a McDonald’s on the trip back to Sydney.
“I only had 2% battery left, but I’m glad to have secured him – he’s been bought for a group of guys who work together, they’re good fun and they just want to enjoy their racing,” Neasham said.
“Most of the stable are juveniles at the moment so I’m just keen to get a few more up and running, I spoke to John Kelly at Newhaven who said this horse was sound and straightforward, so I thought I would roll the dice and see if we can have a little bit of fun with him.”
