The Jewel in the Crown

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday September 30

One of the saddest foaling stories to emerge this spring came from Coolmore last month when they reported the tragic death of Fastnet Rock’s champion daughter Atlantic Jewel, but a month on and her orphaned colt foal by Justify (USA) has not only survived, but he has thrived!

“It was a very sad day for everyone at Coolmore when we lost the great mare Atlantic Jewel while foaling,” said John Kennedy, Stud Manager

“We were fortunate enough to save her Justify colt who has continued to go from strength to strength on his foster mother, which is great for his owners Laurie Macri, Mathilde Texier and others.

“He is an outstanding colt, one of the best bred on the farm so far this year, and we look forward to presenting him at the sales in the future.”

Atlantic Jewel is regarded by many as the best Fastnet Rock to race and her record backs up that claim.

Atlantic Jewel was in a class of her own.

A total of 11 starts for 10 wins – four of them Group I - and a lone second, with Dundeel the only horse to get the better of her when touching her out by a short head in the Group I MRC Underwood Stakes.

Sent to Ireland to begin her stud career, Atlantic Jewel proved her class producing this year’s Group III winning colt Russian Emperor to Galileo and she has two more Galileo offspring to come, a two year-old filly and a yearling colt.

Given the high regard in which she was held, you can see why Coolmore decided to bring the best daughter of Fastnet Rock to Australia to be covered by the best son of Scat Daddy in Justify, who is the only undefeated Triple Crown winner in history.

Justify, the only undefeated Triple Crown winner in history!

Atlantic Jewel was one of 13 Group I winners covered last spring by Justify, whose first foals are impressing breeders all over the country.
