Upset Results from UK 2YO Group I Racing

Tara Madgwick - Saturday September 26

Group I racing for two year-olds at Newmarket in the UK overnight produced upsets in both the fillies Cheveley Park Stakes(6f)  for fillies and Middle Park Stakes (6f) for the colts with the favourites finishing second in both races.

No Nay Never filly Alcohol Free won the Cheveley Park by half length beating Sir Prancelot filly Miss Amulet, who was making news earlier this month when it was announced she had been sold to Coolmore privately, but would remain with her trainer Kevin Condon to run in this race.

The winner Alcohol Free is trained by Andrew Balding and was having just her third start following on from a debut win and a subsequent Group III second.

“Alcohol Free is a super filly. She's a Group 1 winner now and certainly fits into the 1,000 Guineas category as she hits the line well and also relaxes,” said winning rider Oisin Murphy.

“Andrew has done a top job with her because he's had to carefully manage her training regime. She's very generous at home and he's kept a lid on her.”

Purchased for 40,000 euros at the 2018 Goffs November Foal Sale, Alcohol Free is a half-sister to stakes-winner Alexander James from winning Hard Spun mare Plying.

Alcohol Free is the third Group I winner for Scat Daddy’s Group I winning son No Nay Never, who runs at 9.5% stakes-winners to runners.

He shuttled to Coolmore Australia for four seasons with his oldest Australian bred progeny now three year-olds.

Yulong owned Lope de Vega colt Lucky Vega was favourite for the Middle Park, but had to settle for second place beaten half a length by Mehmas colt Supremacy.

A last start winner of the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, the Clive Cox trained Supremacy led and kept going to win his second stakes race at his fourth start.

“Supremacy is a warrior. Clive trains his horses to be very tough and he'll hang in there for you. It was a proper race and he's obviously top class,” said winning rider Adam Kirby.

“He's the same as all of our good ones, he has a very high cruising speed and can find again.”

Bought for 65,000 pounds at the Goffs Doncaster Yearling Sale by his trainer, Supremacy is the best of three winners from Triggers Broom, a half-sister by Arcano to Group I winner Xtension and to the dam of Champion Sprinter Harry Angel.

Supremacy is the first Group I winner among four stakes-winners for first crop sire Mehmas, a Group II winning son of Acclamation that stands at Tally Ho Stud at a fee of 7,500 euros.

He had three runners in this race with Minzaal finishing third.
