New 2YO Stakes-Winner Lope de Vega

Tara Madgwick - Thursday September 24

With 11 mares in Australia due to foal to Balllylinch Stud based Lope de Vega (IRE) this spring there is plenty of interest in his fortunes and he sired his 75th stakes-winner overnight in the UK when two year-old colt La Barrosa captured the Group III Tattersalls Stakes (7f) at Newmarket.

Trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin, La Barrosa made it two wins in as many starts when scoring by a length as favourite.

“I think his class prevailed once he got that gap and he showed a bit of courage and class. La Barrosa hasn't got an entry in the G1 Dewhurst, but on what we've seen today I think supplementing is up for discussion for sure,” said Appleby.

“I'm far from saying he will be supplemented but I feel he's learnt again today and entitled to potentially come forward a bit more.”

A 750,000 guinea purchase from the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, La Barrosa is the best of two winners from Group III placed Montjeu mare Bikini Babe, a half-sister to Group winners Combat Zone, Royal Empire and Scottish.

Lope de Vega shuttled to Australia for the first four seasons of his stud career for Patinack Farm and during that time left Australian Group I winners Gytrash, Santa Ana Lane and Vega Magic.

His service fee during those four seasons ranged from $27,500 down to $22,000.

The French Derby winning son of Shamardal now stands at a fee of 100,000 euros.
