Nicks That Click – Food for Thought

Tara Madgwick - Monday September 14

This unbeaten colt was one of the most exciting stakes-winners last weekend and he’s bred on a highly successful nick that is very relevant to Australian breeders this spring considering Newgate Farm’s newcomer Brutal.

The Chris Waller trained Savabeel colt Mo’Unga made it three wins on the trot when scoring a hugely impressive win in the Listed ATC Dulcify Stakes (1500m).

A cracking type that made $325,000 as a yearling at Karaka, this Waikato Stud bred colt is by their champion sire Savabeel from a daughter of their former champion sire O’Reilly, a cross that has produced 15 stakes-winners, four of them Group I winners.

The stats are impressive for this direct cross with 74.4% winners to runners and 12%stakes-winners to runners!

Australian breeders have access to two top class Group I winning sons of O’Reilly this spring in Brutal (Newgate) and Grunt (Yulong) and while the latter already has Zabeel in his female pedigree, Brutal does not and that makes him a great candidate for all mares carrying Zabeel blood and obviously those by Savabeel.

A look at the stats for O’Reilly and Zabeel combining in pedigrees in any configuration reveals 37 stakes-winners including 11 Group I winners.

Winner of the Group I ATC Doncaster Handicap, Brutal stands at a fee of $27,500 and is free of Danehill blood.
