The second day of the Select Sale, that saw the other half of Part I of the catalogue go through the ring, was marked by a very selective market. In total, 68% of the 111 yearlings presented were sold for an average price of €218,750. Demand however was very strong for exceptional profiles, as evidenced by the three millionaire yearlings.
Overall, the average price for Part 1 was €180,790, and of the 237 yearlings offered, 70% changed hands for a total turnover of €30,680,000.
€2.5 million for a half-sister to SISTERCHARLIE and SOTTSASS
All eyes were turned towards a daughter of Dubawi out of the exceptional young broodmare STARLET’S SISTER (lot 251), notably already the dam of Classic winner SOTTSASS and seven-time Grade 1 winner SISTERCHARLIE across the Atlantic from her first three foals. Bidding beside Bahrein trainer Fawzi Nass, Oliver St Lawrence found himself up against Anthony Stroud in a battle for Ecurie des Monceaux consigned filly, with the gavel finally falling in favour of Nass and St. Lawrence at €2,5 million.
"She’s a lovely filly with an exceptional pedigree," commented Nass. "I’ve bought her for His Highness Nasser Al Khalifa, in partnership with KHK Racing. She’ll come back to England, but we haven’t got a trainer in mind for her yet - we’ll decide soon! These types of fillies are very rare and difficult to get because there is an enormous amount of interest in them. We never doubted that we could get her! We’re delighted to have succeeded."
A little earlier in the day, the same team swooped to secure the only son of American Pharoah in the catalogue (lot 228) for €320,000. The first foal out of Listed placed SEA OF SNOW, the Haras d’Etreham consigned colt hails from the family of triple Group 1 winner LAMMTARRA.
"He’s a lovely son of American Pharoah with a very good pedigree. We hope that he will be just as good as him! He’ll go to England, but we haven’t decided who he will be trained by. We have also bought two yearlings by Almanzor today."
€2 Million for Magic Wand Brother
Top price at the 2016 August Yearling Sale, MAGIC WAND has since gone on to have an exceptional career for Coolmore, not least with 10 places at Group 1 level across the globe.
The opportunity to acquire her brother (lot 199), also an Ecurie des Monceaux and Skymarc Farm homebred by Galileo out of Prudenzia, did not disappoint.
Following a long battle between David Redvers and M.V. Magnier (Coolmore), it was the latter that had the final say at €2 million for the colt, also a three-parts brother to Classic winner Chicquita. “He’s a lovely colt that walks very well,” said M.V. Magnier. “He’s from a fantastic family that we have already had a lot of luck with. Chicquita and Magic Wand have given us a lot of joy on the racetrack, and we hope that he will follow in their footsteps.”
Kingman colt for €1.2 million
Bidding in the ring once again hit seven figures, this time for a son of Kingman (lot 250) that was eventually knocked down to Anthony Stroud for €1,1 million on behalf of Godolphin. Offered from Haras des Capucines, the colt is from a top German family that also includes Prix de Diane winner and six-time winner at the highest level STACELITA and her daughter, dual Japanese Group 1 winner SOUL STIRRING.
