World First Double Cross of Galileo

Tara Madgwick - Saturday August 22

The Group II Futurity Stakes (7f) overnight at The Curragh was interesting for producing a promising winner in Mac Swiney, who is the first stakes-winner anywhere in the world to have a double cross of legendary sire Galileo.

A hombred for the Bolger family, the Jim Bolger trained New Approach colt raced prominently and kept going for Kevin Manning to beat the favourite Cadillac (Lope de Vega) by half a length.

Mac Swiney won his maiden at the same track in mid July and has now won two of four starts.

“MacSwiney likes it here and that was a pleasing and tough performance on ground he didn't really like. He'll go to the G1 National Stakes now and hopefully he will run well there,” said Una Manning, assistant trainer to Jim Bolger.

MacSwiney is the second winner from unraced Teofilo mare Halla Na Saoire, a full sister to Group II winner Light Heavy and three-quarter sister-in-blood to Teofilo’s Group I winner Parish Hall.

His half-brother by Vocalised will be offered at the upcoming Goffs Orby Yearling Sale.

To  date there have been 10 winners to carry a double cross of Galileo from 31 runners with Mac Swiney the first of them to win a Black Type race.

Mac Swiney is the 53rd stakes-winner for Galileo’s Epsom Derby winning son New Approach, who shuttled to Australia for four seasons with Group I Australasian Oaks winner May’s Dream his best result here.
