Savacool Brings Up The Ton for Savabeel

Mark Smith - Thursday August 20

Six-year-old mare Savacool earned a belated stakes win in Thursday’s Listed Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury to become a milestone 100th stakes winner for Waikato Stud’s Savabeel.

Placed 4-times at Group III level Savacool entered the Rowley Mile off seconds in the Group III Tattersalls Cup at Eagle Farm and the Group III Chairman’s Quality at Doomben.

With Tommy Berry in the saddle the daughter of Savabeel came with a barnstorming finish from the rear of the field to defeat her former stablemate Girl Tuesday (Street Cry) by three-quarters of a length with the Bjorn Baker-trained Spencer (Pierro) back in third.

A $9.50 chance, Savacool was the outsider of Waller’s three runners.

Purchased by her trainer for $220,000 out of the Waikato Stud draft at the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling sale, Savacool advances her record to 6 wins, 9 seconds and 2 thirds from 28 starts with earnings of $501,675.

Savacool was consigned by Blue Sky Premium Consignment to the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale where she was purchased by the Chris Waller-managed CSTN for $165,000.

Stable representative Charlie Duckworth said the victory was a reward for her consistency and a boost to her future career as a broodmare.

“It’s great to get the win on the board. She has got plenty of black-type placings in Group races but to get a Listed win is very important for her as a mare,” Duckworth told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“Winning today she showed plenty of zip so it leaves us with plenty of options for her preparation ahead.”

Savacool is the best of five winners from six to race out of the unraced Anabaa (USA) mare Chilled Out who is a half-sister to the very talented O’Reilly mare The Big Chill who won the Listed VRC Red Roses Stakes and placed in the Group 1 MVRC Manikato Stakes and Group 1 SAJC Goodwood Hcp.

When mated to Savabeel, The Big Chill’s sister Forty Two Below produced the dual Group II winner Coldplay.

A brother to Savacool was purchased by Waikato Bloodstock from 2019 NZB Karaka Book 1.

Chilled Out has a 2yo filly and a yearling colt by Savabeel and is due to foal to Ocean Park this spring.

Savabeel’s 100 stakes-winners includes 20 at the highest level.
