One to Watch - Hawkesbury

Tara Madgwick - Thursday August 20

Entered for the Group I Golden Rose, this well regarded So You Think filly opened her account at Hawkesbury on Thursday with an easy victory as favourite.

Trained on the track by Edward Cummings, Obiri had shown promise in her only two previous starts on heavy tracks in June and appreciated some firmer footing in this assignment.

Obiri was always travelling well for Tommy Berry and hit the line hard to win the 1300m maiden by a length and a quarter with ears pricked.

A $110,000 Magic Millions purchase for her trainer from the Kia Ora Stud draft, Obiri runs for a syndicate that includes Kia Ora, Julia Ritchie’s Bangaloe Stud and legendary sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney.

Earlier this year a 5% share in the filly was offered during the Inglis Digital March (Late) Online Sale which was snapped up for $3,000.

Bred by Kia Ora in partnership, Obiri is the first winner for Rupavari, a winning Redoute’s Choice daughter of Group I NZ Thousand Guineas winner Clean Sweep.

Obiri as a yearling

Obiri is the 23rd winner from 28 runners sired by So You Think from daughters of Redoute’s Choice, the nick producing over 82% winners to runners with those winners including Group I winners Inference and D’Argento.
