North Pacific Earns Favouritism for the Golden Rose

Mark Smith - Saturday August 15

Orbis Bloodstock’s glorious-looking Brazen Beau colt North Pacific cemented his spot among the top rung of three-year-olds in Sydney and went to the top of the markets in the Golden Rose following a bloodless win in Saturday’s Group III Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) on a bottomless track at Randwick.

Ridden by James McDonald for Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, North Pacific tracked the early speed set by the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained pair Yardstick and Marsannay.

McDonald eased North Pacific to the outside fence and the further they went the further he increased his margin.

On the line he had five and a quarter lengths to spare over the Smart Missile gelding Bazooka with a further short-neck back to the Snitzel colt Marsannay in third.

North Pacific made his debut in the Group II Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill on February 22 where he finished third.

That proved top shelf form as the runaway winner Farnan would go on to win the Group II Todman Stakes and Group 1 Golden Slipper while the runner-up Global Quest already had the Group III Breeders Plate to his name.

North Pacific was not asked to contest the autumn features in Sydney with the stable opting to give him spell.

He showed the benefit of that when breaking his maiden at his juvenile swansong at Rosehill on July 11.

Consigned by Bhima Thoroughbreds on behalf of his breeder David Gillies, the stunning son of Brazen Beau made a sale-topping $800,000 at the 2019 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

The sleek black colt is the fourth foal of the unraced O’Reilly mare Up In Lights whose first two to the track have not set the world on fire.

A half-sister to 13-time winner and Group 1-placed Spin Doctor (Pins), Up In Lights is out of the winning Octagonal mare Love The Limelight who is a half-sister to the crack racehorse Metal Bender who won the Group 1 Randwick Guineas and Group 1 Rosehill Guineas and was second to Pompei Ruler in the Group 1 ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes when trained by Jack Denham then added the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes, Group 1 Doomben Cup and Group II Hollindale Cup for Chris Waller.

Robert Roulston Bloodstock purchased Up In Light’s Maurice (JPN) colt for $100,000 out of the Three Bridges draft at this year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling.

Up In Light’s was covered by Brazen Beau again last spring.

North Pacific becomes the ninth stakes-winner Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) who heads an impressive roster at Darley Stud’s Northwood property in Victoria this season where he commands a fee of $49,500.
