Pierata Relation Wins G3 Vain

Tara Madgwick - Saturday August 15

Co-bred and sold by Widden Stud, progressive Sebring colt Our Playboy stamped himself as a bright spring prospect when powering home to win the Group III MRC Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Prepared by Mick Price and Mick Kent Jr, Our Playboy won his last two starts before spelling back in April at Terang and Sandown, but has clearly taken a step forward from that level during his winter break.

Ridden by Ben Melham, Our Playboy finished his race off hard to surge home and win by a length over lightly raced Zoustar colt Ranting, who will not remain a maiden for much longer.

“I’ve got to give credit to Ben Wade, who rides this colt at home as he wants to go hard and he’s done a great job getting him to relax,” said Mick Price.

“We bought him as a sprinting Sebring and that’s what we’ll keep him at for now.”

A $210,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Widden Stud draft, Our Playboy runs for a big syndicate of stable clients and has won three of five starts earning nearly $140,000.

Our Playboy, pictured as a yearling, was bred and sold by Widden Stud

Bred by Widden Stud in partnership, Our Playboy is the first winner for Mischief Night, an unraced half-sister by Shamardal (USA) to Group I winner Pierata and Group III winner Ashokan.

Mischief Night was onsold by Widden at the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale where she made $200,000 when in foal to Pierata’s sire Pierro.

She has since produced a yearling colt from that mating for Kingstar Farm and is in foal to Capitalist.

Our Playboy is the 61st stakes-winner for Widden Stud’s much missed sire Sebring, whose last crop of foals are now yearlings.

He is also the first stakes-winner anywhere in the world to carry a double cross of  champion sire Flying Spur 3 x 3.
