One to Watch – Newcastle

Tara Madgwick - Thursday August 13

Arrowfield Stud’s blueblooded Deep Impact colt from champion filly Miss Finland made a winning debut at Newcastle on Thursday.

Prepared by Chris Waller, three year-old Bucharest went to the races well educated with four previous trials under his belt and relished the 1500m of this open maiden.

He stalked the leader for James McDonald and when asked for top gear in the straight surged past that rival and then held off a late challenge from his stablemate and race favourite Zarzou to win by three quarters of a length.

It was a pleasing debut from a colt that still looks unfurnished and whatever he does now is likely to be improved upon come the autumn.

Bred and retained to race by Arrowfield and partners, Bucharest is a half-brother to Group I winner Stay With Me and stakes-placed Earth Angel and Woodbine being the sixth winner from six foals to race from Redoute’s Choice’s champion daughter Miss Finland.

A remarkable athlete, Miss Finland was sharp enough to win the Group I ATC Golden Slipper over 1200m and tough enough to win the VRC Oaks over 2500m. She won 11 races in total and over $4.6million with five of those wins in Group I races.

Miss Finland has a two year-old colt by Shalaa (IRE) and is due to foal to Dundeel this spring after missing to I Am Invincible.
