Rehab4Rehab Offers Another Avenue for Racehorse Retirement

Media Release - Thursday August 13

A new equine assisted therapy program on the Mornington Peninsula is looking to address issues for humans and horses and has the support of some of Victoria’s leading trainers.

“Together with Sarah Munn, we’ve founded Rehab4Rehab on the Mornington Peninsula- an Australian first not-for-profit equine assisted therapy program helping retired racehorses and humans suffering from mental illness,” said Alisha Griffiths.

“Both horse and human will go on a step-by-step journey of healing and rehabilitation.

“As an exceptionally skilled and trained therapist, Sarah, handles the therapy. I, along with my years long experience with horse care and management, handle the horses and together we’ve created a powerful synergy.

“Equine assisted therapy isn’t new. It simply doesn’t have the research behind it. We will be researching this as we go and plan to prove exactly how powerful it is.”

Rehab4Rehab hope to develop the concept and aim to be in a position to help more retired racehorses all year round.

They are happy to take on horses that may have soundness issues leaving them unfit for equestrian pursuits as they can still be used for therapy on the ground and for teaching kids to lead, wash, brush, rug and handle with no need to be ridden.

Rehab4Rehab creates a new purpose for these horses, who are looking for their path in life post racing.

Thoroughbreds have frequently had intense human interaction since being born and adapt and thrive to each of their life stepping stones.

When they join Rehab4Rehab, it is a much slower pace compared to what they’re used to, but as they are a highly adaptable and accepting breed, they easily progress into their new phase of life, thus, making them a crucial element to Rehab4Rehab’s equine therapy program.
