Wonderful Wandabaa!

Tara Madgwick - Saturday August 8

The Australian Bloodstock team have had a lot of fun with talented galloper Wandabaa, the four year-old daughter of Wandjina winning her first start of the new season at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Kris Lees trained filly won her first three starts last year in country and provincial races, but has really come of age this year winning four of her past five starts in the metropolitan area including this latest success.

Ridden by Louise Day, Wandabaa made good use of gate one to follow the fence and let down with a good turn of foot on the heavy ground to power clear and win the 1200m Benchmark 88 event by more than three lengths.

“She’s flying, she just keeps performing,” said Day, who has now won three races on Wandabaa.

“It was her first time on a track this heavy and she just put them away.”

A $36,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Ascot Park draft for Australian Bloodstock, Wandabaa has won seven of 13 starts earning just shy of $300,000 for her lucky team of owners.

She was bred by Bob Hannon and is a half-sister to Group III placed Seewhatshebrings being the fourth winner from Mabkhara, a half-sister to Group III placed Lucky Eighty Eight from the family of Group I winners Rewaaya and Sense of Occasion.

Mabkhara is in foal to another of the Newgate sires in Deep Field.

Wandabaa is one of a string of good winners this year for Wandjina, who stands at Newgate Farm at a fee of $11,000.
