Another Star Filly for Deep Impact

Tara Madgwick - Saturday August 1

Coolmore’s two time Group I winner Fancy Blue is not the only classy Deep Impact three year-old filly running in Europe this year with the Al Shaqab homebred Katara scoring her first Black Type success overnight taking out the Listed Chalice Stakes (1m4f) at Newmarket.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Katara broke her maiden last start at Kempton and kept up the good work winning this much tougher assignment by four lengths over the Godolphin entry Expressionism.

“Sir Michael Stoute liked her coming into the race and she is progressing. Her dam stayed a mile and six, but this filly is not short of gears,” said winning rider Oisin Murphy.

“We will see what Sir Michael wants to do but she could stay at a mile-and-a-half for the moment. I'm sure Sir Michael will go step by step with her. She could end up getting to a high level.”

The 159th stakes-winner for Deep Impact, Katara is the first foal of Group II placed Asyad, a half-sister by New Approach to four stakes-winners from Champion German 3YO Elle Danzig.

Now the winner of two from four, Katara is the fourth stakes-winner for the late Japanese super sire Deep Impact bred from a Galileo line mare with dual Group I winner Saxon Warrior the best of them. The nick between the two sires runs at nearly 11% stakes-winners to runners.

He stands at Coolmore this spring at a fee of $17,600.
