First Win for War Memorial

Tara Madgwick - Sunday July 26

A full brother to Eleven Eleven, who made news this week after being elevated to the winner of the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas following the disqualification of Alligator Blood, promising two year-old War Memorial shed maiden status at Gosford on Saturday.

Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, War Memorial was having his second run back from a long spell and led all the way to win the 1200m maiden by nearly two lengths.

Third on debut in the Listed BRC Phelan Ready Stakes back in December behind another Fastnet Rock juvenile in Rathlin, War Memorial has had a few little issues since and been gelded, but has obviously returned in good order.

A $680,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Edinburgh Park draft for China Horse Club/Newgate Bloodstock, War Memorial is the second winner from well bred import Smokin Alice (USA), who comes from the family of Australian Group I winners Criterion and Comin’ Through.

War Memorial as a yearling

Edinburgh Park also have siblings to Smokin Alice in Nothin But a Dream (USA) and Alice’s Smart (USA), who have produced Group I winner Glenfiddich and Group III placed Miss Wonderland respectively.

Edinburgh Park sold the current yearling from Smokin Alice, a colt by Exceed and Excel, for $1million at Magic Millions this year.
