Danehill Free

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday July 15

We love Danehill, of course we do, but if you own a broodmare that already has a double cross of the legendary sire then you will probably think long and hard about what to do with her this spring and a full list of Danehill free sires is probably what you really want to see.

In-breeding to champion stallions is not inherently a bad thing, obviously not as nearly every stallion carries Northern Dancer blood in some way shape or form and the fastest horse in the country Nature Strip has a pedigree featuring three lines of him  4 x 5 x 5.

As time moves on and Danehill moves back in pedigrees we will see more and more horses bred carrying multiple lines as we do now with Northern Dancer, a good example being Golden Slipper winner Farnan, who has five lines of Northern Dancer 5 x 6 x 5 x 6 x 6.

That said, too much of a good thing up close in a pedigree can result in a flawed individual.

Stamina, soundness and temperament are often the casualties in varying degrees and while everyone can point to exceptions to the rule, you don’t make expensive business decisions based on the luck of some.

Speed is the most important attribute for any thoroughbred, that's unquestioned.

Soundness issues can be managed, while lack of ability cannot, however a fast horse that cannot stand a workload is not fit for any purpose.

I Am Invincible is the most expensive stallion in the country and is Danehill free.

Below is a broad selection of stallions standing in Australia that are completely free of Danehill blood and cover a wide spectrum in terms of price. (First season horses are in Bold)
