Headwater's Mr Colorful Breaks His Maiden in Style at Hawkesbury

Mark Smith - Thursday July 2

The race for champion first crop sire for number of winners has plenty of legs left in it yet as we head down the home straight for season 2019-20 with Headwater continuing his late season rally with his son Mr Colorful opening his winning account over 1000 metres at Hawkesbury on Thursday.

Mr Colorful was a $100,000 Gold Coast Yearling

Ridden by Glyn Schofield for trainer Gary Moore, Mr Colorful showed plenty of zip from the barriers and had the chasing pack off the bridle before rounding the home turn.

Despite wandering about a bit in the straight, the son of Headwater hit the line strongly to defeat Magic Ruler (Snitzel) by two lengths with another son of Headwater Winds Of War, a half-length back in third.

Mr Colorful made his debut when unplaced in the Group III Breeders’ Plate at Randwick back in October last year before showing he had takes plenty of benefit from a 35 week back when second over 1100 metres at Gosford at his most recent start on June 11.

Purchased by George Moore Bloodstock for $100,000 out of the Torryburn Stud draft at the 2019 MM Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Mr Colorful is the first foal of the 3-time city winning Shamardal (USA) mare Holder Sunset who was herself a $260,000 2011 Easter Yearling purchase by Belmont Bloodstock Agency.

Holder Sunset is out of the stakes-placed More Than Ready (USA) mare Montana Sunset a half-sister to Montana Flyer (Flying Spur) who won the Group II ATC Roman Consul Stakes and two runnings of the Group III Millie Fox Stakes and was Group 1 placed in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

Mr Colorful becomes the ninth stakes-winner for Vinery Stud Headwater and his third winner in the last five days.

The son of Exceed And Excel trails only Spill The Beans (12) and Pride Of Dubai (10) for individual winners.

He will stand at a fee of $13,750 in 2020 with all Vinery stallions service fees payable on a live foal basis.
