A Closer Look at Much Loved Lonhro

Tara Madgwick - Sunday June 28

The most popular racehorse of his time, who kept doing battle right until the end of his five year-old season, Lonhro might be in the twilight years of a magnificent career, but good fertility in recent times has ensured he’s still a popular choice for the astute breeder.

A homebred for the Ingham family, Lonhro started his stud career at Woodlands Stud and remains with Darley, his fee for 2020 set at $66,000.

Lonhro is one of the most charismatic thoroughbreds you would ever see!

Like many good stallions, his popularity has waxed and waned over the years, reflected in his service fee, but the arrival of his champion 2YO Pierro in his fifth crop was to prove a game changer.

Lonhro had been the Australian Champion Sire of 2010/2011 by earnings with a broad spectrum of classy stakes-winners headed by Group I winner Beaded, but he lacked a ‘big horse’ until the arrival of Pierro.

Turning 22 this year, Lonhro now has a number of sons at stud, but in Pierro has a sire son that will ensure his presence is felt for many years to come.

Lonhro shuttled to North America for three seasons and left 11 stakes-winners from his travels to Kentucky, but for the purposes of this story we will look just at his Southern Hemisphere results.
