Sixth Winner for Headwater

Mark Smith - Tuesday June 16

Despite a torrid run, Darby Racing’s two-year-old filly Ashra Jahre did the right thing by punters in an open age maiden over 1000 metres at Nowra on Tuesday to ring up winner number six for Vinery Stud's Headwater.

Considered highly enough by the Mark Newnham stable to make her career debut in the Group III Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick last October, Ashra Jahre was making her fourth start.

With Tom Sherry in the saddle, Ashra Jahre was caught three wide the trip from her outside barrier although Sherry didn’t panic and kept the long striding chestnut in a nice rhythm.

Not shirking her task when given her head, Ashra Jahre ran down the only other two-year-old in the race Titan Star (Rubick) to win by three-quarters of a length with the six-year-old Gullen Glory (Laguna De Bay) three lengths back in third.Headwater (Mark Smith)

An $80,000 purchase by Darby Racing / DeBurgh Equine out of the Glastonbury Farms draft at the 2019 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Ashra Jahre is the fifth foal and fifth winner out of the Encosta de Lago mare Jahre who is having a wonderful run of late.

Darby Racing and DeBurgh Equine went to $120,000 at the 2018 Classic Sale to secure Ashra Jahre’s year-older half-sister Blazing Miss (Sizzling) who has won over $322,000 with five wins including a double at Randwick recently, while the 5yo Smart Missile gelding Something Fast has also been a great money-spinner winning five of his 10 starts including three at Randwick and one at Rosehill for the Anthony Cummings stable.

A granddaughter of the outstanding matron Procrastinate, Jahre had a full-brother to Ashra Jahre make $150,000 to the bid of Anthony Cummings at the 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

After foaling a Sizzling filly last spring, Jahre was covered by Dundeel.

Headwater will stand at Vinery Stud in 2020 at a fee of $13,750.
