Classy Weanlings on Offer in NZ National Weanling Sale

In a silver lining to the COVID-19 cloud that forced the cancellation of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Karaka May Sale, buyers now have access to a high-quality catalogue of weanlings in the National Weanling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus incluidng siblings to three G1 winners.

Running on the enhanced online platform from June 11 to 21, the Sale features 82 weanlings, many of which boast exceptional pedigree credentials. Bidding will close at 3PM (NZT) on Sunday 21 June. 

There are three siblings to Group One winners.

Lot 39 (Sacred Falls x Tiptoes) is a half-brother to this season’s Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) winner Tiptronic (NZ) (O’Reilly).

Lot 50 (Sacred Falls x Akris) is a half-sister to New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) winner Planet Rock (Fastnet Rock) and Group Three winner Ringo (Fastnet Rock).

Lot 61 (Tavistock x Danasia) is a half-brother to Rosehill Guineas (2000m) winner Zabrasive (NZ) (Zabeel). Their dam is Danasia (Danehill), who won at Listed level in Sydney and placed in the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m).

The granddam of Lot 2 (Zacinto x Kovka) is a half-sister to Hong Kong Horse of the Year and multiple Group One winner Viva Pataca (Marju), who earned more than HK$75 million (NZ$15 million) in stakes.

Lot 3 (Almanzor x Lady Pinot) comes from a famous Pencarrow Stud family, with second dam Madame Echezeaux (NZ) (Montjeu) being a half-sister to the million-dollar yearlings, Group One gallopers and sires Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill) and Burgundy (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice). Champion mare Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm) is another notable close relative.

Waikato Stud’s draft gets off to a strong start with Lot 4, a Savabeel colt out of Lego (NZ) (O’Reilly), whose dam Legs (NZ) (Pins) won the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m) and Kelt Capital Stakes (2040m).

Lot 6 (Vadamos x Mamma Rose) is out of a half-sister to the dam of Group One Australian Derby (2400m) winner Jon Snow (NZ) (Iffraaj).

The dam of Lot 8 (Per Incanto x Mayon) is a half-sister to Group One winner Yelgun Dawn (NZ) (Deputy Governor).

Lot 10 (Belardo x Midnight Breaker) is a half-brother to eight individual winners including the Karaka Million (1200m) winner Hardline (NZ) (Showcasing).

Lot 11 (Vadamos) is out of Mill Duckie (NZ) (Magic Ring), who won the Listed Sunline Vase (2100m) and placed in the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m) and Thorndon Mile (1600m), along with four other Group races.

The dam of Lot 12 (Per Incento x Miss Hoi Polloi) is a half-sister to the dam of three stakes winners including Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) winner Brambles (NZ) (Savabeel).

Lot 13 (Tivaci x Miss Lioness) is out of a half-sister to three stakes performers – multiple Group One winner Lion Tamer (NZ) (Storming Home), Group Two placegetter Let Me Roar (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) and Group Three performer Lubaya (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle).

Lot 21 (Charm Spirit) is a daughter of Princess Annaliese (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), who won the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m), finished third in the Group Three Lowland Stakes (2100m) and fourth in the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m). She is the dam of three winners including recent Hong Kong winner Here Comes Ted (NZ) (Per Incanto).

Meanwhile, Lot 83 in the catalogue is a stallion nomination to Microphone, generously gifted by Darley to be sold on behalf of The CatWalk SCI Research Trust.

A well-related son of champion sire of Exceed and Excel, Microphone was champion two-year-old in Australia in 2018-19, winning the Group One ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and placing in the Golden Slipper (1200m).

His short career featured five victories, which also included the Group Two Skyline Stakes (1200m) and Group Two Autumn Stakes (1400m). He also collected a further Group One placing in the Randwick Guineas (1600m).

Bloodstock inspections for the sale will consist of parades scheduled by NZB and buyers can also contact vendors to arrange their own on farm/private viewings.
