One to Watch – Sha Tin

Tara Madgwick - Sunday May 31

The Sha Tin meeting on Sunday produced an explosive first starter by Deep Field that clocked a sub 56 second gallop in the 1000 metre Class Four.

Trained by Frankie Lor and ridden by Vincent Ho, three year-old gelding Winning Dreamer was a short priced favourite and punters were obviously on the right track.

He ran up to his good trial form, surging away over the last 100 metres to score by nearly two lengths in a dominant display.

“He has a bright future and hopefully he’ll be in Group races in time,” Ho said of the 2.4 favourite. “He jumped well and relaxed really nicely in the race and just kept going.

“He’s still got a lot to learn but it’s been better each time he’s had a barrier trial – he was very green and he settled more on the turn in his last trial.”

Lor was pleased with his debutant who may be seen in action again before the campaign wraps up on 15 July.

“He’s got quality but he’s still green and was laying in through the final stages, so I’d like to give him one more run before the end of the season,” Lor said.

A $300,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase for Tartan Meadow Bloodstock / Mr Peter KS So from the Haunui Farm draft, Winning Dreamer is a half-brother to stakes-winner Ocean Jewel.

He is the fourth winner from Group III placed Markisa, who is also the grand-dam of Group winners The Real Beel and Catch Me.

A member of the illustrious Eight Carat (GB) family, Markisa is a half-sister to Group I winner Shower of Roses and daughter of Group I winner Marquise.

Winning Dreamer is the fourth winner in Hong Kong for Deep Field, who has enjoyed incredible success this season with over 70 winners making him the leading second crop sire by winners and also the leading sire of three year-old winners ahead of Snitzel, Fastnet Rock and I Am Invincible.

Deep Field stands at Newgate Farm at a fee of $55,000.
