French Derby Contender for Charm Spirit

Media Release - Monday May 25

French racing at the weekend unveiled an exciting prospect for the upcoming Group I  Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) when 3YO colt Fantastic Spirit (Charm Spirit) outclassed his rivals to win the Listed Derby du Midi at Bordeaux-le Bouscat.

Fantastic Spirit is a new SW for Charm SpiritTrained by Champion trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, Fantastic Spirit provided his young sire Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit) with his seventh stakes winner from just two crops to race.

Rouget is no stranger to Jockey Club success having previously won the Jockey Club with Sottsass (2019), Brametot (2017), Almanzor (2016) and Le Havre (2009).

The Derby du Midi is one of the Bordeaux region’s two premier races and Fantastic Spirit has now won three of his last four starts on his mission towards the French blue riband event.

Prix du Jockey Club success is also notable in the family of Fantastic Spirit who is closely related to Jockey Club winner and Champion Sire Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) who formerly shuttled with great success to Windsor Park Stud, also the southern hemisphere base for Charm Spirit.

Charm Spirit has sired 17 stakes performers to date including four first-crop, Group winning 3YO’s in Australia and New Zealand this season and he returns to Windsor Park for 2020.
