Tara Madgwick - Monday May 18

Deep Field is looking to set a record this season for Australian winners sired by a second crop stallion, a record held by his sire Northern Meteor, with a talented winner at Ballarat on Monday adding to his tally.

Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, three year-old gelding Dimaggio was resuming from a lengthy spell following a fourth placing at his only previous start back in May last year.

He proved that the patience shown by his owners may well be worth while when he was strong to the line in winning the 1000 metre maiden by a neck as a hot favourite with four lengths back to the third horse.

A $300,000 Inglis Classic purchase for McEvoy Mitchell Racing Pty Ltd / Blue Sky Bloodstock (FBAA) from the draft of Lucas Bloodstock, Dimaggio is the first living foal of Exceed and Excel winner Uncommon, a full sister to Group III winner Exceedingly Good.

Two maiden winners on Monday for Deep Field brings his tally to 71 winners for the season which puts him well withing striking distance of the record for a second crop sire held by Northern Meteor given there are still two months of the season to come.

Deep Field stands at a fee of $55,000 at Newgate Farm this spring.
