Lonhro's Ranier Stradbroke Bound

Mark Smith - Saturday May 16

In contrast to his heart stopping win at Randwick at his most recent start, Ranier treated his supporters to a much easier watch in Saturday’s Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Rosehill.Ranier image Steve Hart

Given the run of the race one out one back by Hugh Bowman Godolphin’s 4yo son of Lonhro defeated Brave Song (Your Song) by one and a quarter lengths with Eleven Eleven (Fastnet Rock)) another short neck away in third.

It was a third consecutive win in the race for Godolphin following Osborne Bulls in 2018 and Trekking last year.

Both went on to finish third in The Everest but James Cummings is keen to tackled the group 1 Stradbroke in three weeks where he will likely join his stablemate and defending champion Trekking who claimed a second Group 1 on Saturday with his win in the Goodwood at Morphettville.

"The Everest isn't on his radar right now, we're realistic," Cummings told AAP.

"But I'll tell you what the Stradbroke is. It's three weeks out from the Stradbroke and the horse is going to be arriving down on the limit and he's going to be in winning form so there's a lot to like about that.

“While Ranier has a long way to go before he proves himself to be in the same echelon as Osborne Bulls and Trekking, one thing he is, is a dark horse.

"He has kept improving and I love the way we've got him flying at the present time."

A homebred for Godolphin, Ranier advances his record to 6 wins, 5 seconds and 2 thirds from 23 starts with earnings of $581,220.

It was the fourth stakes win for the good-looking son of Lonhro who is the second foal of the talented Commands mare Kanzan whose three stakes wins included the Group III BRC Glenlogan Park Stakes.

A three-quarter sister to the recent listed stakes-winning 2yo Kordia (Epaulette) and a half-sister to the stakes-placed Giresun (Domesday), Kanzan has a yearling colt and a weanling colt by Lonhro.

She was covered by Encryption last spring but tragically died in March.
