First Stakes Winner for Headwater

Mark Smith - Saturday May 16

Short-priced favourite Wisdom Of Water began like a shot out of a gun in Saturday’s Ken Russell Memorial Classic at the Gold Coast and he made every post a winner to credit his sire Headwater with his first stakes-winner.

Ridden by Robbie Fradd for Toby and Trent Edmonds, Wisdom Of Water was eased down to defeat the dead-heaters, the Spirit Of Boom colt Tick Tock Boom and the Exceed And Excel colt Superare, by two and three-quarter lengths.

Aquis Farm had purchased a 50 percent interest in the handsome chestnut during the week.

Fourth in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic, Wisdom Of Water advances his record to three wins from five starts with earnings of $309,600.Wisdom Of Water was a $70,000 MM Yearling

He will now head to the Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes over 1400 metres at Eagle farm on June 6.

“It was a good effort but it would be better if there was a bit more tempo for him where he can drop in behind them,” Toby Edmonds said.

“That will come when he faces better opposition but with the lack of tempo we were confident to have him up on the speed and not get behind horses that will pull up in his face.

“He’s had two solid gallops now and will go into the JJ Atkins cherry ripe.

A first stakes-winner for Headwater

“It’s Eagle Farm, we’ve got another three weeks to get him a bit fitter and we might take him up there to have a gallop because he performed poorly there at his first start.”

A $70,000 purchase by Blandford Bloodstock out of the Eureka Stud draft at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Wisdom Of Water is the third foal and third winner out of the winning Royal Academy (USA) mare Regal Tier who is a half-sister to eight winners including the dual Listed winner Tierquillo and the stakes-placed Eminence Grise and to the dam of the Listed Glasshouse Stakes winner Flamboyer.

Regal Tier has a colt foal by Headwater and was covered last spring by Encryption last spring.

Silver slipper Stakes winner Headwater (Exceed And Excel) will stand for a fee of $13,750 at Vinery stud in 2020.
