A Closer Look at Pierro

Tara Madgwick - Monday May 4

The bar is set high for Golden Slipper winners that go to stud and all are afforded great opportunity from the get go, but some do better than others and a substantial fee increase this year for Pierro would suggest many breeders believe he has the potential to go all the way and emulate the success of legendary Golden Slipper winning Champion Australian Sires such as Marscay, Flying Spur and Vain.

Pierro is looking to follow in the footsteps of Golden Slipper winning legend sires Flying Spur, Marscay and Vain.

Despite the challenging times we face, Coolmore took the decision to raise Pierro’s fee to $137,500 this year, a move that has largely been well received indicating widespread respect for what this champion son of Lonhro has achieved to date.

He was the Champion First and Second Season Sire and this year with his oldest progeny now five, Pierro is making Snitzel work every step of the way to keep the Australian Champion Sire’s Title he has held for the past three seasons.

With 96 winners of $14million in prizemoney, Pierro splits Snitzel and I Am Invincible at the top of the list, albeit with only two thirds of the number of runners fielded by the big guns.

There comes a time in the career of any future champion sire when the writing is on the wall and the stud lucky enough to stand that horse can take the quantum leap and price him accordingly.

That time is now for Pierro.
