Third Stakes Win for Savanna Amour

Mark Smith - Saturday September 2

Ben Melham spent the greater part of the Caulfield straight trying to extract Savanna Amour out of a zip fastener pocket, but once the daughter of Love Conquers All found clear air she accelerated quickly to claim the $150,000 Group III Ladbrokes Cockram Stakes (1200m).

It was a third stakes win for the John Meagher-trained mare who rounded out her three-year-old season with wins in the Group II Angus Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield and the Group III Gold Coast Guineas.

She made her four-year-old own bow in the Group III Bletchingly Stakes on a heavy track at Sandown where she failed to land a blow behind Ability and Lankan Rupee.

"She travelled really strong in the blinkers today and probably carried me a bit closer than I expected," Melham said.

"She towed me into traffic and I was lucky it opened up in the straight. I knew I had plenty of horse but I had nowhere to go.

"The firmer track helped her as well, she just didn't handle it at Sandown."

A $100,000 purchase by Ontrack Thoroughbreds from the Toolooganvale Farm draft at the 2015 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Savanna Amour advances her record to 5 wins and 2 thirds from 11 starts with earnings of $418,250.

She is the third foal of the Stravinsky mare Savanna La Mar a 5-time winner in Brisbane.

Purchased for $70,000 by Newgate Farm at the 2010 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, Savanna La Mar is a half-sister to Group III winner Voodoo Beat out of Cajun Magic (Twig Moss) a half-sister to Group I Golden Slipper winner Marauding.

Savanna La Mar has a 3yo colt by Pierro and a yearling filly by Dissident.

She was bred back to Super One last spring.

Savanna Amour is one of 58 live foals from the first crop of Sun Stud's handsome Love Conquers All (Mossman).
