Deep Impact's Miyake Takes Aim at the SA Derby

Mark Smith - Wednesday April 22

Boasting a pedigree that sends pedigree enthusiasts into raptures, the Deep Impact (JPN) colt Miyake may have earned a shot at the Group 1 South Australian Derby following a heart-stopping win at over 1900 metres at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Supporters of Miyake would have had their hearts in their mouths when Brenton Avdulla was searching for a way out of a zip-fastener pocket in the straight.

When he found the narrowest of seams, Miyake finished powerfully to defeat his better-fancied stablemate, the Adelaide gelding, Flinders by one and a quarter lengths with another blueblood  Harpo Marx (IRE) (Galileo x Nechita) a short-neck back in third.

Stable representative Charlie Duckworth praised Avdulla’s ride.

“It was a very tough win, Brenton’s your man if you want a bit of argy-bargy, he’s a brave, confident rider and I had a flashback when he won Kubrick won the Bondi and he scraped the paint that day,” Duckworth told Sky Racing.

“He’s on an upward curve and is certainly a very valuable colt being by Deep Impact so it was a very important win for his career.

“He has some great owners that have been very loyal to the stable. It’s been a long patient wait for them, but it’s been rewarded.”

Miyake has been difficult to follow since earning Breednet One To Watch status when breaking his maiden at Kembla Grange back in January.

A regular in stewards reports with ranging from suspension for racing manners to cardiac arrhythmia, Miyake advances his record to 2 wins and a second from 7 starts with earnings of $50,140.

Sporting the colours of his breeder Arrowfield Stud and with some of the Waller stables main clients in the ownership, Miyake is the first foal of the Group III MRC Ladies Day Vase winner and Group 1 SAJC Schweppes Oaks runner-up Star Fashion.

This family featured ealier in the day when Star Fashion's half-sister Dezign produced the 2YO winner Sauvestre, also trained by Chris Waller, read about him here.

Purchased for $330,000 by Apollo Ng at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Star Fashion is a daughter of Street Cry (IRE) out of that wonderful racemare Elegant Fashion (Danewin) who won a trio of Group II races in Australia, VRC AV Kewney Stakes, MRC Angus Armanasco Stakes and Moonee Valley Oaks before becoming a star in Hong Kong where her wins included the Hong Kong Derby at Sha Tin.

Elegant Fashion is a granddaughter of The Queen’s French Oaks and English One Thousand Guineas heroine Highclere who is also the granddam of Deep Impact’s dam Wind In Her Hair.
